Behind the 'Limelight'
Little did nurseryman, Peter Donnelly, realise
when he was sowing some Arizona Cypress seeds,
that one of them would grow into a spectacular
new coloured foliage variety.
Peter named it 'Limelight' (Cupressus Glabra) due
to its bright lemon/lime coloured foliage. There
is no other Cypress in the world like it for its
colour, vigour and landscape usage. The mother
plant was found in 1986 in a tray of seedlings
and stood out, because normally this Cypress is a
blue/green in colour, yet the 'Limelight'
seedling was a bright lemon yellow.
It was nurtured for two years at Matcham, NSW.
Peter and his wife Ruth decided it was worthy of
obtaining Plant Variety Rights protection for
this plant under legislation introduced in
Australia in 1987.
From 1989 young 'Limelight' propagated by cutting
were trialled all around the Central Coast of NSW
to determine its hardiness. To Peter and Ruth's
delight it proved to be vigorous and healthy in
all conditions, producing an outstanding plant
with a long life span and many uses. |

Avenue
Planting
There is no doubt that an impressive avenue will
give your home or property that special
distinction it deserves. 'Limelight' creates an
elegant avenue of gold'n'lime foliage 12 months
of the year. The conical shape is both stately
and practical. It provides the perfect vertical
accent and will not encroach onto driveways or
pathways. For gardens large or small, 'Limelight'
will create a handsome avenue for you.
The Best
Alternative
As a comparison to Cup. Castlewellan Gold, the
colour difference is quite dramatic. If you want
a truly golden foliage colour, then 'Limelight'
is the answer. Growth rates are as good if not
better. In extreme heat, 'Limelight' has proven
to be superior to many other species, showing no
burning in temperatures above 40oC.
High humidity can cause big problems with some
Cypress such as 'Brunniana Cypress', not so with
'Limelight'. It does not suffer from canker and
the foliage is resistant to fungal browning.
'Limelight' is the better choice.

As a
Screen Plant
Every one wants a fast growing, long lived,
evergreen, maintenance free screen plant to
create a feeling of privacy and security. Many
plants have been tried in the past, most being
disappointingly short-lived and in need of
constant pruning and maintenance. 'Limelight'
will not disappoint you, it is a pleasure to grow.
'Limelight' is ideal for screening between units,
along fence lines, around pools and courtyards,
because it is narrow growing (1.5m) and does not
drop any leaves or spent flowers. 'Limelight'
fulfils every requirement as a screen plant for
today's gardener. The feeling of privacy by
planting a 'Limelight' screen is something you
must experience.
